Bill Harley in Songs and Stories About Growing UpLast week, my 8-year-old asked me what I want to be when I grow up. Um, I don’t know. Neither, apparently, does Bill Harley. In I Don’t Know: Songs and Stories About Growing Up, kids of all ages will enjoy hearing about the joys and pitfalls of being a grownup.

Maybe then they won’t want to do it so fast.

This Friday night, Storytelling Arts will feature songs and stories together at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center theatre. Tickets are only $10 for adults and $5 for kids 5-12. Plus, if your kids show their Indianapolis library card at the door, admission is free!

This is an awesome, inexpensive introduction to Storytelling Arts, if your family isn’t familiar. We attended the ghost stories performance in October, and the kids fell in love with storytelling. The fun stories. The cadence of the telling. Being drawn into the story as if you were in a book.

I’m excited to take them all to I Don’t Know: Songs and Stories About Growing Up as part of our spring break in Indianapolis. It’s the last performance weekend for Storytelling Arts, both featuring Bill Harley. (Grownups should head back out on April 12th for Talk of the Town.)

You have the chance to win tickets to Friday’s show now! Simply leave a comment here, and tell us your favorite part of growing up. You can earn additional entries by:

  • Subscribing to our site by RSS
  • Following @StorytellingArt and @FamilyFunInIndy on Twitter

  • Sharing this giveaway (Twitter, Facebook, etc): Sample tweet – Taking the kids to I Don’t Know: Songs & Stories About Growing Up with @StorytellingArt, thanks to @FamilyFunInIndy! http://bit.ly/OuJkhY
  • Enter for a second chance to win on Gotchababy!

For your extra entries to be counted, be sure to leave an additional comment directing us to your entry. Only one additional entry per method (i.e. While multiple tweets are appreciated it, only one will count as a drawing entry.) The contest runs until 4/09 at 11:59pm est. One winner will be notified by email on 4/10 and receive 4-pack of tickets to the event. Winner will have 12 hours to claim the tickets or a new winner will be chosen.

Tickets: $10 adults; $5 kids 5-12
Performance: Friday, April 11th, 7:30-8:30

Tap Battles in IndianapolisMy kids are home on spring break this year, and we have been looking for ways to keep them busy.

Luckily, we live in Indianapolis, and there is no shortage of fun things to in the city. This weekend, there are some awesome performances that should cap off our spring break quite nicely, and we have ticket giveaways!

First up, Tap Battles in Indianapolis. If you saw Tapman at Indy Fringe last summer, you’re going to love this! TapMan is back in Indy again, with a fun dance performance like nothing I’ve ever seen.

I can’t wait to take the tween to see the show — especially since a friend of hers is dancing in it. Tapman has been working with Circle City Tap Company to bring the event to Indianapolis featuring local dancers. I love that he’s bringing a local element to the show.

You can choose between 3 performances on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to fit into your weekend. Tickets are only $20 for adults and $15 for kids, plus you get with a free DVD with every ticket. Or, you have the chance to win one of your own!

Simply leave a comment here, and tell us who you will take to the performance. You can earn additional entries by:

We’re big on books around here. Book was my oldest’s first word. Bookshelves fill our home — overflowing with books, books, and more books for all ages.

In fact, we still have board books and easy readers, though my youngest has long since moved onto chapter books. It’s definitely time to sort through the bookshelves and pass on those too-young picture books to someone who needs them.

That’s why I was so thrilled to see the newest promotion from McDonald’s of Central Indiana. Right now, when you visit participating locations and community dropoffs around Indianapolis, you can trade in your old children’s books for McDonald’s Happy Meal coupons — and a new book of your own courtesy of the fun picture books replacing toys nationwide.

The Happy Meal titles all focus on promoting a healthy, active lifestyle which goes hand in hand with McDonald’s efforts to provide healthier options for their littlest guests. Happy Meals now include apples, half the fries, and are eliminating soda as an option for kids. Next year, McDonald’s will also be offering vegetables as a side item choice for Happy Meals!

I’m excited to have a somewhat healthier option when we’re out and about. While we often try to avoid fast food, sometimes we run into a time crunch, start heading home later than expected or simply want to have a special “treat” as part of a family fun outing. This week, we hope to check out one of the McDonald’s Happy Meal Days in the Indianapolis area.

There will be fun activities for kids and Happy Meal books plus a dropoff site for Give a Book, Get a Book. Donated books will be given to Ronald McDonald House, Indy Reads, and other literacy organizations in the Indianapolis area. Remaining Happy Meal Days will be at Attica Public Library on November 13th 11am-6:30pm and Hamilton East Public Library (Fishers) on November 13th and 14th 10:30-11:30am.

In addition, you can drop books off — and receive your free Happy Meal coupon — at the following locations through November 14th:

  • Hussey-Mayfield Public Library (Zionsville)
  • Attica Public Library
  • Elwood Public Library
  • Barton Reese Pogue Memorial Library (Brownstown)
  • Anderson Public LIbrary
  • Indy Reads (2450 N Meridian St)
  • Ronald McDonald House

Want to add McDonald’s Happy Meals and some new books to your family fun plans? I’m giving away a prize pack right here! Simply leave a comment here, and tell us how you work books into family time. You can earn additional entries by:

  • Subscribing to our site by RSS
  • Following @JustHeather and @MyIndyMcDonalds on Twitter
  • Life Family Fun in the City on Facebook
  • Instagram a photo of your book donation with #McIndyMoms
  • Share this giveaway on social media, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, etc: (Sample tweet: Books in Happy Meals – yay! I hope to win a @MyIndyMcDonalds prize pack from @JustHeather to celebrate: bit.ly/1bl0bsa #McIndyMoms)

For your extra entries to be counted, be sure to leave an additional comment directing us to your entry. Only one additional entry per method (i.e. While multiple tweets are appreciated it, only one will count as a drawing entry.) The contest runs until 11/14 at 11:59pm est. One winner will be notified by email on 11/15 and receive a McDonald’s prize pack, including a week of Happy Meal coupons (good at participating central Indiana locations) and a $10 Amazon gift card. Winner will have 12 hours to complete the claim form or a new winner will be chosen.

CHAIRish the Children is a special event on November 8th, featuring an auction of elaborate designed chairs for adults and children. All proceeds directly benefit Prevent Child Abuse Indiana and The Villages, a foster and adoption agency in the Indianapolis area.

We’ve been immersed in the foster care system for nearly a year now, as our adoption has progressed. There’s a lot involved — social workers, case managers, CASA volunteers, therapists.

And in the center of it all, is the foster/adoption agency. They work hard to support families in foster care, find adoptive placements for children who need a permanent family, and provide services to kids in need.

The Villages is one of these agencies in the Indianapolis area. They work so hard to protect children, support families, and train foster parents. As a non-profit agency, the funds raised through CHAIRish the Children will help The Villages protect children and place them in safe, loving homes.

This year’s CHAIRish the Children event will be held at the stunning Lucas Estate. It features 33.6 acres of beautiful land in Carmel, Indiana and a 15,000 square foot sports pavilion, including a bar and fireplace, sweeping balconies, and a full basketball court that is a replica of of IU’s basketball arena floor. I cannot wait to check it out!

A collection of the chairs, along with children and chair-themed artwork, will also be available for bidding through an online auction from November 1st at 9:00am to November 7th at 9:00pm. CHAIRish the Children will be on Friday, November 8th from 6 to 9pm, when you can bid on special items in a live auction.

Want to be there to support children in foster care? You have the chance to win a pair of tickets now! Go check out the chairs that will be auctioned and come back to comment here with your favorite. You can earn additional entries by:

Every year, I am amazed by the Children’s Museum haunted house, but this year they have truly outdone themselves. In celebration of the 50th Children’s Museum Guild haunted house, the Time Warp theme takes you on a journey through each decade. It starts with the upside down room originally featured in the very first haunted house in 1964 and ends with a 50th birthday celebration of witches.

This year there are two spinning vortexes — a tunnel to enter the haunted house and a 3D tunnel to end it. For those who get a little too dizzy, there is an alternate route for both. In between, you’ll find a room straight out of That 70s Show, a creepy Star Wars cantina, a 1980s game room in spectacular 3D, The 90s world web web (including the horrifying sound of a modem connection!), Y2K scares, and the spooktacular future from the imagination of the witches.

I took tons of pictures and even put together a creepy preview trailer from my visit. I can’t wait to take the kids — they’re going to love every minute of it! But they’re on their own if they want to go for lights out — that’s a little more than I can handle without peeing myself.

Awesome Advice: There is an escape route in every room for kids who have a real issue during the event. There is also a hidden Dr. Timestein cartoon in each room, to keep younger children engaged and focused away from the fear when necessary. Be sure to check out the fun facts in each room during Lights On hours, too!

Montessori Moment: With three levels of fear, you can choose the right time to attend the Haunted House with all ages. Lights On hours provide a spooky but not too scary event for younger children, with full lights, no scarers, and fun prizes in each room. For those ready to be a little more scared, Frightening Hours feature black lights, hidden spookers, and a little more fear.

New this year is Xtreme Scream, on Friday nights from 9-11pm. It’s not just a lot scarier but it is a choreographed storyline designed to terrify teens who think they can handle it. Xtreme Scream is $12 and includes a look at Hollywood Haunts inside the museum.

Ready to be scared out of this century? You have the chance to win a family 4-pack of tickets right here! Simply leave a comment here, and tell me your favorite Children’s Museum Haunted House. You can earn additional entries by:

For your extra entries to be counted, be sure to leave an additional comment directing us to your entry. Nothing says fall like a good corn maze and a hayride to a pumpkin patch. At Piney Acres in Fortville, you can do those things a whole lot more.

Isn’t Piney Acres a Christmas Tree Farm? Why yes, yes it is! But each fall, the folks at Piney Acres celebrate the Halloween and all of the fun that comes along with it.

At Piney Acres, you can take a hayride to a pumpkin patch, and walk through a corn maze. The very daring will want to wait until after dark to go through the Haunted Maze. There’s also a haunted house inside, that’s fun for older children and adults alike.

There’s also a play area for children that includes a smaller corn maze, straw mountain, pumpkin toss and a sandbox.

Are you ready to have some fun on the farm? Enter to win a pass that’s good for four people to enjoy a hayride and the corn maze (please note: attractions are priced separately, see website for specifics http://www.pineyacresfarm.com/Hours.html)

I can’t think of anything more terrifying than listening to ghost stories in October. Except maybe if said ghost stories were told in a cemetery. Featuring storytelling artists with tales so vivid you’ll jump out of your skin.

So when Storytelling Arts of Indiana invited my family to attend this year’s Ghost Stories at Crown Hill Cemetery, my instinct was “No, thank you!” But then I remembered that I live with plenty of people who would enjoy being creeped out of their skin. So, we’re headed to the Crown Hill on Saturday night for spooky tales in the middle of a graveyard.

The good news for me is that the stories begin at 7:30pm with only mildly spooky tales. The ghost stories get progressively scarier as the evening goes on. I plan to leave early on with the youngest, while the big kids stay behind to be terrified with my husband.

The gates open at 6:30, so pack a picnic and arrive early for great seating. You can also find a variety of food trucks on site. For an extra $15, purchase a ticket to the RIP Reception, featuring food, beer, and wine to mingle with the storytelling artists, board members, and sponsors of this awesome event.

The Redbull Indianapolis GP rolls into next Friday for action all weekend long. See Motorcycles on Meridian Friday and Saturday evenings, and then see them in action during trials at the track. Sunday is the main event, with the several races slated throughout the day.

There’s more than motorcycles happening at the track though- there are three days of fun planned for the whole family during the RedBull Indianapolis GP. There’s live music, a kids zone, and a social media garage. Check out the schedule of each day’s events- there’s plenty to do for the whole family! My family loves walking around the Speedway- there are always things going on, and there’s nothing like watching wheels go around the track, FAST.

Oh and here’s a good deal-  Kids 12 and under are free Fri. – Sun. when accompanied by an adult with a general admission ticket. Here is additional ticket information.

Are you ready for some motorcycle action? You have the chance to win a pair of tickets to Sunday’s races! Simply leave a comment here, telling me what you like to do when you go to the track (or what sounds like fun, if you’ve never been) . You can earn additional entries by:

It really has been the best summer EVER! Not only have we enjoyed the best Indy has to offer and been on a fabulous vacation to Cape Ann, but we’ve done it all for the first time as a family of six.

It’s been amazing to share our beloved city with the boy. Our bonding time has been unbelievable, and now we’re excited to see how it all goes as the kids settle into new schools.

But first, it’s time for the grand finale of our amazing summer — the Indiana State Fair! The fair is August 2nd to August 18th this year and has everything a family needs, all in one awesome package. There’s food, fun, entertainment, and animals galore. Did I mention the food?

Let me break it down for you — here are 4 great reasons to cap off your summer at the Indiana State Fair:

  • Food: There’s just nothing like fair food. Fried foods, elephant ears, funnel cakes… I’m partial to cotton candy, Dairy Bar milkshakes, and the pork tent. You guys, the pork tent. I am already salivating thinking of the BBQ pork. This is the Year of Popcorn, so I’m also crossing my fingers for some good popcorn balls. And don’t forget to check out the world’s largest popcorn ball in the all new Glass Barn.
  • Fun: The midway is where it’s at, and we’ll be taking advantage of Kiddie Mondays with $15 wristbands good on all rides. New this year is a kiddie midway, featuring rides and activities for the younger set. Plus, I’m sure we’re coming home with another set of goldfish from the $5 game. My kids are freaky good at that stupid game; last year we had to buy 3 new tanks to host their 8 fish.
  • Entertainment: There are concerts, events, and demonstrations at every turn. The demolition derby is probably my favorite — $5 admission to the Hoosier Park Grand Stand on August 18th. You’ll find tons of entertainment at Hoosier Park Grandstand, Dow Celebration Park, Marsh Free Stage, and DISH Main Street Stage. Check the entertainment schedule for daily events.
  • Animals: Did you know there are calves born daily at the State Fair? Check out the livestock nursery, animal barns, and pony rides in the Fun Park. Last year we stumbled on baby chicks in the expo hall — adorable!

What’s your favorite part of the Indiana State Fair? Tell Family Fun in the City for a chance to win a family 4-pack of tickets to cap off your Best Summer EVER! To enter, simply leave us a comment here and share your favorite thing about the fair.
